How to Budget for a Renovation

Preparing for a home construction project is a big task. There is a lot of planning from both a financial and technical standpoint. It is important to have the right team on your side to help you plan accordingly and execute everything within budget.

Before you get started trying to plan your budget, it’s important to ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you want this project to accomplish?
  • What details are needed to make it happen?
  • What are you willing to compromise on?
  • What are you willing to splurge on?

With those questions in mind, these are some important budgeting considerations we tell all our clients:

  • Expect to spend at least $100 to $200 per square foot on any renovation.
  • It’s easier, and potentially more affordable, to prioritize projects by room and build a budget around the cost of each individual project.
  • Before you set your budget, decide how you will finance the project (cash, credit, loan, etc.)

To get an estimated idea of what your remodeling budget should be, consider the value of your home as a whole. You don’t want to spend more than 10 to 15% of your home’s value on a single room.Additionally, we always tell clients to set aside 10 to 20% of your available funds for unexpected expenses. While we try to plan for all situations, sometimes things come up in a project that is beyond our control. We’ve also found that sometimes homeowners choose to upgrade certain aspects too. We’d rather have extra funds allotted for these instances rather than being stuck and unable to complete the job.

Choosing Cabinets and Counters – What’s Your Kitchen Remodel Style?

When planning a kitchen remodel, it’s no secret that cabinets and countertops not only take up a lot of visual space but represent a big portion of your budget. Pair this with their ability to transform the look of your space, choosing the right cabinets and countertops for your personal style and family lifestyle is essential in creating your dream kitchen. But where to start? Rossi Construction has put together this handy guide full of pointers and considerations to take into account when planning your kitchen remodel.

Minimal and Modern

As mentioned, your personal style will be the largest factor in what color and design you will choose to incorporate into your new kitchen. Modern minimalism is seen on the cover of countless home design magazines, and with good reason! Marked by clean lines and no fuss, there are few rooms that are better to keep clean and simple than the kitchen. Consider a calming grey wood stain and cabinets with simple small handles.

For the countertops, consider the needs of your family in addition to your preferred style. Granite is a stunning popular option, but the maintenance and resealing required to prevent staining is something to factor into your decision.  For this reason, quartz has risen in popularity and the beautiful white and neutral colors throughout it compliments a minimal clean kitchen perfectly. A modern kitchen is often completed with shiny stainless-steel appliances, sure to stand the test of time in your new kitchen.

Tradition over Trend

If your personal style preference tends to be on the more traditional end of the spectrum, you would likely enjoy a traditional style kitchen remodel. Beautiful cabinets with medium to dark woods like oak, cherry or mahogany will add a homey warmth to your traditional kitchen for that timeless traditional feel. A traditional kitchen design means careful attention to detail, which generally includes more ornate touches and moldings. For your traditional kitchen’s countertops, consider granite, marble or wood as any will complete your traditional look beautifully.

Contemporary Changes

If you are still having trouble nailing down your ideal kitchen design style, you might find yourself drawn to contemporary style. Contemporary is sometimes confused with modern, likely because they do share elements. contemporary is the celebration off all things currently making waves. Transitional contemporary design is a beautiful combination of themes from modern traditional and beyond. The term itself means “of the moment” which means it is always changing to celebrate the hottest styles of the time. and traditional that is ensure you’ll have a beautiful kitchen. Before starting on your transitional kitchen design project, it is important to have a clear theme in mind. It may help you to search for design ideas on apps like Pinterest or leaf through design magazines.
